If you read last month’s blog, then it dovetails neatly with our topic this month. Today we are featuring a program the Children’s Library has proudly supported for years called Read 1000 Books Before Kindergarten. This kindergarten readiness initiative’s goal is to read books together with your child. Snuggling up and reading together creates great memories, helps grow your child’s vocabulary, builds greater self-confidence and fuels their imagination.

The goal is to read 1000 books. That may sound like a lot, but if you read just one book a night you will have read 365 books in a year. Two books a night? That’s 730 books in a year! Any book that is read to your child, even by siblings, teacher, or friends count, even if your kid wants to hear their favorite over and over. Since most kids don't start kindergarten until age 5 you have plenty of time to get started.

Stop by the library to get registered and pick up a starting packet. The starting packet includes information about the program, a sticker reading log, and stickers. The program is self-paced and can take a few months to a few years. After logging 100 books, bring your book log back to the library to record your milestone, claim a small reward, and get a new reading log. Any and all children can participate from birth until they enter kindergarten.
